Surface modification and interfacial adhesion of polyimide fibre by phosphoric acid treatment

In this paper, the surface modification of polyimide fibre (P84) by phosphoric acid (PA) solution of different concentration was investigated. The interfacial adhesion properties between polyimide fibre and epoxy were studied by microbond pull-out tests. The chemical composition and morphology of polyimide fibre surfaces were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) respectively. From the SEM micrographs and the FTIR spectra, it could be seen the fibre has a rougher surface and more reactive chemical groups such as -COOH and -OH than the untreated fibre. Microbond pull-out tests of the fibre treated by 20wt% phosphoric acid showed that the interfacial shear strength between polyimide fibre and epoxy significantly increased by 58.12% up to 15.10 MPa, while the tensile strength of the treated fibre retained 81.73% of the original fibre.
