Effects of jute fiber pretreatments on mechanical properties of jute/PP composite

In this study, jute fiber was pretreated by sodium hydroxide, acetic acid and silane coupling agent (KH550). Linear density, moisture absorption, mechanical properties, FTIR analysis and SEM morphology observation of jute fibers were tested. Jute fiber reinforced PP composites were thereafter fabricated by hot pressing. Tensile strength of PP/Jute composites increased by 39%, 29% and 41%, in the case of being pretreated by alkali solution, KH550 and acetic acid respectively. The interfacial property improvement of jute/PP composites after fiber pretreatments was primarily analyzed through fiber properties changes.
