The effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of polyacrylonitrile fibers

This paper aimed to analyze the changes of mechanical properties of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers during different heat treatments, of which tensile strength were measured with the gauge length of 10mm and 20mm respectively. At 20mm gauge length, the fibers possessed lower tensile strength and wider distribution than those at 10mm gauge. At both gauge lengths, the tensile strength of oxidized fiber (OF) was lower than PAN precursor (PANP), and the tensile strength increased through low and high temperature carbonization. The average diameters decreased along heat-treatment process. Using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), both the quantities and depth of grooves on surface of fibers diminished with temperature increased, which suggested that the surface topography affected on the tensile strength of fibers. We applied a two-parameter Weibull distribution model to analyze the tensile strength distributions of four carbon fibers (CF)and found that Weibull shape parameter, m, decreased, indicating the distribution increased with the increase of temperature. The possible reasons for such influence were also discussed in this paper.
