Preparation and properties of the novel disulfonated poly( p-phenylene benzoxazole) (DSPBO) fiber

A novel disulfonated poly(p-phenylene benzoxazole), DSPBO, was prepared by polycondensation of 4,6-diamino resorcinol dihydrochloride(DAR), terephthalic acid (TPA) and disodium-2, 2’-disulfonate-4, 4’-dicarboxydiphenyl ether (SODBA) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA). DSPBO fiber was spun via a dry-jet and wet-spinning technique. The mechanical property and the thermal stability of the DSPBO fiber were measured. The wetting performance and surface free energy of the DSPBO fiber were investigated. It was found that the tensile strength of the DSPBO fiber decreased with increasing content of SODBA in the macromolecular chain, the tensile strength was 23.2cN/dtex and 17.3cN/dtex respectively with 1mol% and 3mol% SODBA incorporation, while the heat stability of DSPBO-1% kept almost the same as that of PBO. Furthermore the contact angle of DSPBO to water and alcohol got much smaller than that of PBO. The surface free energy of DSPBO-1% increased up to 48.67mJ/m 2 which was 37.1% higher than the value of PBO fiber.
