Thermal properties of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) fiber

Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs) with the qualities of high strength, stiffness and chemical resistance, good dimensional stability and low liner thermal expansion coefficient make them attractive high performance engineering materials. In this paper, the thermal properties of a novel thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer fiber were studied. TLCP fibers possessed good thermal stability and the decomposition temperatures were above 450 ℃. Heat treatment process increased the thermal properties of TLCP fibers. Also, heat treatment increased both the degree of crystallinity and the melting temperature of TLCP fibers. The optical textures of polymer observed by POM revealed a strong birefringence in the melts, indicating that the nematic mesophases were formed.
