Uniform etching study of high performance polyethylene terephthalate fiber in continuous atmospheric plasma

Argon plasma was used to uniform surface etch of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber under atmospheric environment. An investigation of the active species in plasma as well as their effects on plasma-polymer interfaces during the treatment process had been indentified. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning probe microscope (SPM) were used to measure the etching effects of plasma on polymer surface. In addition, the states particulates in argon plasma were assessed by optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and the characteristic of discharge voltage and current were recorded by oscillograph. Results showed that oxygen and nitrogen in plasma were in their excited-state and the oxygen and nitrogen ions enhanced the etching of polymer surface. At the same time, these active species (oxygen and nitrogen radical and ion) also led to the surface modification of polymer surface. Etching effects seemed to act slowly and be time-related. Moreover, the gas flow rate and the discharge power had a remarkable influence on the etching pattern as well as the extent of etching. This experiment may help to afford better process control and substantiate mechanisms for plasma modification of high performance polymers.
