Toughening of epoxy resin using reactive liquid (CTBN) rubber
Toughening of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin with carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) cured with 4,4’-diamino diphenyl sulphone (DDS) has been investigated. A comparative study of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra showed the modification as a result of chemical reactions between epoxide groups, curing agent and CTBN. Satisfactory improvements in impact strength as well as lap shear strength were observed in the prepared blend systems. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the epoxy resin matrix was slightly reduced owing to the addition of CTBN. The development of two-phase morphology for the CTBN-modified systems was evident from scanning electron microscope (SEM). The dispersed rubber phase showed a homogenous particle size distribution. The size of the rubber phase domains increased with increasing the concentration of CTBN.
