Study of the grafting copolymerization modification of caprolactam onto hardwood pulp fiber: Effects on the physical properties of the grafted pulp

The effects of grafting on bleached hardwood pulp with caprolactam in an alkaline aqueous mediu m, with potassium persulphate/sodium bisulfite as initiator system, were studied in this paper. Both the grafting ratio and the modified pulp properties of the grafting copolymerization process had been determined. And the relevance between the modified effects and main technological parameters such as dosage of main chemicals (monomer, initiator, sodium hydroxide), reaction time and temperature were discussed. The optimum modification technology conditions were as below: the monomer concentration was 0.44mol/L, the potassium persulfate concentration was 14.8mmol/L, the mass ratio of potassium persulfate to sodium bisulfite was 1.25, the reaction temperature was 50 ℃, and the reaction time was 3 hours. The results showed that a higher grafting ratio of 28.2% could be reached under the optimized modification conditions, and the physical strength performances of the modified pulp such as tensile index, bursting index and tearing index could be improved significantly with the optimum modification conditions. But the brightness of pulp was reduced somewhat. The structure of the copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, which verified that caprolactam had been grafted onto the hardwood pulp successfully.
