Carbon fiber paper for fuel cell electrode
Carbon fiber paper is widely used as gas diffusion layer (GDL) substrate in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this paper, carbon fiber paper was prepared from PAN-based carbon fiber through traditional paper making process. Effects of beating condition of pulp in the paper making process on the properties and structures of resultant carbon fiber papers were studied by means of optical microscopy, electrical and mechanical property measurements. The results showed that the electrical resistance of carbon fiber paper increased with a longer beating time. And the average absolute deviation of electrical resistance of the samples decreased with longer beating time, which suggests longer beating time leads to better dispersion of the carbon fiber. Carbon fiber paper with thickness of 0.37 mm, bulk density of 0.41 g/cm 3 , electrical conductivity of 0.92 s/cm and tensile strength of 1.08 MPa was produced with a pulp beating time of 20 min in the paper making process.
