Delamination damage analysis of UHMWPE/LDPE thermoplastic composites based on acoustic emission

The delamination damage of was studied by a new analytical technique in this paper. Experiment was carried out on ±45° angle-ply laminates and specimens of different fiber volume fractions were tested under uniaxial tensile load. The damage process was monitored by Acoustic emission (AE) technique. Fracture surface was also observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The collected AE signals were identified by pattern recognition (PR) technique in order to get a reliable deducing of the induced damage source. Analytical results revealed that the delamination of UHMWPE/LDPE composites was caused by the serious debonding between fiber and matrix, which was also proved by the SEM observation. This paper confirmed that the delamination analytical technique was efficient for exploring the damage mechanism of UHMWPE/LDPE thermoplastic composites.
