Free radical copolymerization of acrylonitrile with different comonomers in 1-buty-3-methylimidazolium chloride

Free radical copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) with various comonomers in 1-buty-3-methyli-midazolium chloride (bmimCl) with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator were investigated. The copolymerization kinetics, the constitutes and the thermal properties were analyzed in details. The compositions of the resulted copolymers were analyzed by Elemental analysis. All the reactions proceeded fast in ionic liquid, while polymerization rate varied with different comonomers under the same reaction conditions. In 120 min, a limit conversion of around 80% is reached in the copolymerization except when N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) acted as comonomer. Polymers with viscosity molecular weight higher than 10 5 g/mol were synthesized in the used ionic liquid. Thermal properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is shown that the onsets of cyclization of the copolymers except for P (AN-MA) shifted to a lower temperature compared to homopolymer, showing an improvement of the cyclization reaction.
