A Novel PVA/BmimOH blend membrane for anion exchange membrane fuel cells

A novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide (BmimOH) electrolyte membrane has been prepared for application in alkaline direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). These anion exchange membrane with high conductivities has been prepared by doping BmimOH and thereby hydroxyl groups into the polymer. The characteristic properties of the PVA/BmimOH membrane have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), AC impedance and cyclic voltammetry. The results revealed that PVA/BmimOH membrane exhibited superior thermal stability. The ionic conductivity of these membrane was found to be of the order of 10 -2 S/cm at ambient temperature.
