Preparation and properties of polyvinyl alcohol / carboxymethyl chitosan blend films
A series of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCT) blend films with different weight ratio of PVA to CMCT were prepared by solution-mixing method. The morphology, structure and properties of the films were observed via scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The mechanical properties of the blend films were determined. The analysis indicated a good miscibility between PVA and CMCT because of the strong interaction from the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The optimal values of the dry tensile strength and breaking elongation were obtained when CMCT content was 40 wt%.
