Study on a novel polypropylene-based magnetic composite

The blend of polypropylene (PP) and magnetic polymer microspheres (MPS) was exploited for magnetic composite. Super paramagnetic nano-ferrite prepared by a co-precipitation method was added to polystyrene (PS) by a dispersion polymerization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allowed the observation the morphology of nano-ferrite, PS and PP. Nano-ferrite and MPS in PP matrix were dispersed uniformly, and no agglomeration developed among nano-particles. Nano-ferrite was employed with lubricant effect resulting in excellent interface compatibility in PP/MPS composites, and their tensile properties were interesting. The magnetic weight gain (MWG) of the composites was found to be dependent on the amount of MPS incorporated into them.
