Washing durability of superhydrophobicity of acetylated cellulose fabrics

A superhydrophobic nanocomposite coating for cellulose fabrics by silica sols has been investigated in recent years. However, the washing durability of superhydrophobicity for the cellulose fabrics received little attention. In order to investigate the interaction between silica sols and cellulose fabrics, cellulose fabrics were first acetylated to different degrees by hydroxyl group substitution before superhydrophobicity finishing. The washing durability of superhydrophobicity for the acetylated and native cellulose fabrics was compared. The superhydrophobicity and the washing durability of cellulose fabrics were characterized by water contact angle and Si elemental analysis (by ICP-AES). The surface morphology of fabrics was outlined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All the results supposed that the introduced acetyl group reduced interaction between the cellulose fabric and silica sol, which should be the main reason for the decreased durability of the superhydrophobic coating for the acetylated cellulose fabric.
