Surface-induced chitosan contanining polyacrylic acid hydrogel onto polypropylene SMS nonwovens

Polypropylene (PP) Spun-Meltblown-Spun (SMS) Nonwovens (NWs) are widely used in medical and hygiene applications. PP SMS NWs were modified to enhance hydrophilicity and antibacterial activity in this work. In the first stage, NWs were hydroxylated by using aqueous potassium peroxydisulfate solution under a strong flow of nitrogen. In the second stage, the hydroxylated NWs were subjected to grafting of acrylic acid by using cerric ammonium nitrate as an initiator. Subsequently, chitosan was grafted onto the modified NWs with N,N-Methylenebisacrylamide. The modified NWs were characterized by XPS spectroscopy and SEM. It indicated that acrylic acid was copolymerized and hydrogel was grafted onto SMS NWs. Hydrogel grafted NWs exhibited enhanced wettability and water absorption ability. With the further introducing of chitosan, the modified NWs exhibited effectively antibacterial activity against E.coli.
