A novel thermo-sensitive semi-IPN hydrogel based on biodegradable poly(β-hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate)

A novel semi-interpenetrating polymeric networks (semi-IPN) temperature-sensitive hydrogel based on monomer N-isopropylacrylamide NIPAM and biocompatible poly(β-hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate) (PHBV) were prepared by using trichloromethane as reaction medium and N,N’-Methylene-bis-acrylamide(MBA) as cross-linker at 60℃. The chemical structure and interior morphology of resulted semi-IPN PHBV/PNIPAM hydrogel were characterized by FTIR and SEM respectively. The deswelling kinetics of semi-IPN hydrogel was investigated by gravimetric method. The data obtained show that semi-IPN PHBV/PNIPAM hydrogel was successfully prepared because of good dissolution of PHBV in trichloromethane. In comparison with pure PNIPAM hydrogel cross-linked by MBA, the brittleness of traditional PNIPAM hydrogel was greatly improved by introducing PHBV, but the interior pore size decrease. The incorporation of PHBV improves the shrinking rate of conventional PNIPAM hydrogel, but exhibits poor oscillatory swelling-shrinking property.
