Investigation on Degumming of Ramie with Compound Enzymes

The enzymatic degumming of ramie is a kind of environmental-friendly method. Compared with the chemical degumming, it shows the advantages of improving the quality of degummed ramie, lowering the pollution of the environment and reducing energy consumption. Therefore, the enzymatic degumming technology will be one of the main tendencies in the degumming of ramie. The effect of compound enzymes treatment on ramie was studied in this paper. On the basis of the tested properties of treated ramie fibers, such as residual gum content, fineness, tenacity, and the COD, SS contents of the waste solution of degumming. This article discussed the feasibility of applications of bio-chemical treatment in the ramie degumming. The results showed that the optimum parameters of the bio-chemical degumming were: compound enzymes dosage 3% (o.w.f), and the treatment temperature 55℃, 3 hours, pH=8.5, rotation of 150rpm, followed by the chemical treatment of sodium hydroxide 5g/L and hydrogen peroxide 1.5g/L. In addition to this, the bio-chemical degumming indicated that the process conditions were mild, the fiber damage was slight, the quality of degummed ramie was improved and the pollution of the environment was significantly reduced.
