Effects of sisal fiber treatments on friction and wear properties of SF/ PF composites
In order to enhance the bonding force of sisal fiber (SF) and polymer matrix, different surface modifiers (alkali, coupling agent and borax) were used to treat sisal fiber. The sisal fiber/nano-SiO2 phenol formaldehyde resin composites were prepared through compression molding. The friction and wear properties were investigated by M-2000 wear tester in a dry friction condition. The abrasion surfaces of the composites were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the surface treated sisal fiber improved the wear resistance of the composites significantly. The wear volume of the borax treated sisal fiber composites was decreased by 73.3%, compared to the untreated sisal fiber composites. SEM results showed that the wear mechanism changed from the fatigue wear to slight plough wear.
