Environmental-friendly soy protein isolate/poly (vinyl alcohol) blend films plasticized by glycerol: compatibility, mechanical properties and biodegradability

Biodegradable and biocompatible blend films based on soy protein isolate (SPI)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) plasticized by glycerol were prepared by a solution-casting method. The mechanical property measurement indicated that SPI/PVA films exhibited high elongation. In addition, the blend polymer can be soft or semi-rigid dependant on the plasticization of glycerol proved by X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests. Biodegradation results showed that the SPI/PVA/glycerol films lost weight at a slower rate than pure SPI film. SPI/PVA blend film provides a convenient way to prepare SPI based plastics for practical applications.
