Preparation of durable superhydrophobic surfaces by sol-gel method on hydrophilic materials
Durable superhydrophobic surfaces have been prepared from modified silica sol and octadecyltriethoxysilane (OTS) on cotton substrates. Such surfaces were obtained first by dip-coating. The modified silica hydrosol prepared via hydrolysis and condensation of water glass and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) onto cotton textiles, then the coated cotton was immersed in ethanol solution of 3% OTS to gain a thin film through self-assembly process. The durability of hydrophobic cotton fabrics was evaluated by measuring the water contact angle after washing. As a result, the contact angle of the treated cotton textile could reach 152° before washing and still remain 98 degree after 50 washing cycles, showing a good durability.
