PAN-based Carbon Nanofiber Mats Prepared by Electrospinning and Their Tensile Strength

Two different molecular weight polyacrylonitriles (PANs) were copolymerized using DMSO/H2O as a mixing solvent system. The PAN was electrospun to nanofiber mats, and the mats were stabilized and carbonized in different atmospheres and different temperatures. Some test technologies were employed to analyze the chemical structures of nanofibers, which include FTIR, SEM,etc. The tensile strength of nanofiber bundle was measured by an electronic universal testing machine. The results are shown that carbon nanofiber mats prepared by PAN-2 had better mechanical properties than PAN-1. The related data could be useful to the preparation of high-strength electrospinning carbon nanofibers.
