Preparation and characterization of (UHMWPE)/MMT clay nanocomposites sheets by gel and pressure-induced flow (PIF) processes
Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)/MMT clay nanocomposites sheets were prepared by means of gel process with different contents of UHMWPE and MMT using paraffin oil as solvent. Good dispersion of MMT clay is successfully carried out. The dispersion of the MMT particles in UHMWPE are confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mechanical testing. The dispersed clay particles in the nanocomposite sheet provide good thermal and mechanical properties. Compared with pure UHMWPE, all these nanocomposites show enhancement of the melting temperature (Tm) and the thermal decomposition temperature. Additionally, the incorporation of clay into the UHMWPE nanocomposites significantly improves the mechanical properties of these materials, i.e. the results obtained for tensile strength and elongation indicate that the UHMWPE/MMT is higher than that of the pure UHMWPE.
