Drug release from films and electrospun fiber sheets of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate- co-3-hydroxyvalerate)
Films and electrospun fiber sheets made from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) are explored as drug delivery vehicles using tetracycline hydrochloride as a model drug. In order to assist in choosing suitable process conditions for spinning, the viscosities of PHBV solutions in chloroform were investigated. The fiber sheets were electrospun and the films were casted from chloroform solutions containing a small amount of methanol to solubilize the drug. The vitro release of the tetracycline hydrochloride from these new drug delivery systems in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was followed by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The morphology of these new drug loaded materials before and after release was investigated by SEM.
