Polyacrylamide (PAAm)/nano-ZnO hybrid hydrogels: preparation and properties

The polyacrylamide (PAAm)/nano-ZnO hybrid hydrogels are successfully prepared by incorporating surface modified ZnO nanoparticles into the hydrogel matrix, and N,N’-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS) is used as the crosslinking agent. The hybrid gels show obvious improvement in the mechanical properties compare with pure PAAm hydrogels due to the interaction between the ZnO nanoparticles and PAAm chains as well as the uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles in the hydrogel matrix. The morphology, components and the swelling ratio of hybrid gels are investigated by SEM, FT-IR, and weighting method. Otherwise, an antibacterial property is also shown for the excellent antibacterial property of ZnO nanoparticles. It is believed that the hybrid gels with improved mechanical property, proper swelling property and antibacterial property have potential applications in biomedical field.
