Morphology of electrospun fibers from regenerated silk fibroin aqueous solutions with the addition of metallic ions
K+, Ca2+, Mg2+are important metallic ions in the silk gland of silkworm. In this paper, these ions were added to regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) aqueous solutions with a RSF concentration of 30% at a pH of 6.0, from which RSF fibers were prepared by electrospinning process. The results showed that the concentration of the metallic ions had an influence on the rheological properties, the electrospinnablity of the RSF aqueous solutions and the morphology of the electrospun fibers. There were a lot of micro particles on the surface of the RSF fibers with K+, while the surfaces of the RSF fibers with Ca2+and Mg2+were smooth. With increasing concentration of mixed metallic ions, the eletrospinnablity of RSF aqueous solutions decreased.
