Dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotube in spinnable alumina sol by in-situ process
A multi-walled carbon nanotubes doped alumina sol was prepared by in-situ process to produce carbon nanotube reinforced alumina fiber. The dispersion state and stability of MWNTs in alumina sol were characterized by UV-vis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) and Raman spectra. The results showed that MWNTs were more easily debundled to individual carbon nanotubes to form homogenous dispersions by in-situ sol-gel method,. During the in-situ sol-gel process, an aluminum hydroxide layer was formed and covalently bonded on the surface of MWNTs, the aluminum hydroxide layer enhanced the interactions between MWNTs and sol matrix, and the colloidal stability of MWNTs in alumina sol was thus improved.
