Dispersion of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Polyvinyl Alcohol Aqueous Solution

The homogeneous and stable dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in polymer matrix is the crucial problem to prepare polymer/CNTs composite. In this paper, the factors, such as acidic treatment, pH value of solution and surfactant incorporated were discussed. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were refluxed for 2h in sulfuric acid/nitric acid mixture. The zeta potentials under different pH were tested by Zetasizer Nano instrument and the results showed that pH=5 was the best for the dispersion of MWNTs in water. Some surfactants were used as dispersant for the polyvinyl alcohol/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PVA/MWNTs) aqueous solution. The dispersing ability was compared by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The film from MWNTs/PVA aqueous solution was cast and the morphology of that was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
