Synthesis, characterization of silane coupling agent (SCA) intercalated vermiculite (VMT)

The intercalation of silane coupling agent (SCA) into vermiculite(VMT) was firstly investigated in this study. Different functional silanes, 3-aminopropytriethoxysilane (KH-550) and N-β(aminoethyl)-γ-aminopropylmethyldime-thoxysiliane (TM-602) were chosen to carry out the study. The grafted VMTs were characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). All the analysis results indicated that both acid and configuration of the SCAs had great effect on the intercalation of VMT. In the presence of acetic acid, TM-602 and KH-550 could get into the interlayer space of VMT, in the form of ammonium salts through ion exchange process. KH-550 did not increase the basal spacing of VMT, because it is not long enough to expand VMT. With longer molecular length, TM-602 increased the basal spacing of VMT from 1.46nm to 1.92nm.
