The Effect of Rheological Properties on the Morphological Development of Preparing PBT Nanofibers from PBT/CAB Immiscible Blends

Nano-scale PBT fibrils were obtained from PBT/CAB immiscible polymer blends by in situ microfibrillar formation during the melt extruding process. Three sets of blend samples were considered based on Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT)/Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) blends with the same composition (10/90) and CAB matrix, but with three kinds of PBT differing in their rheological properties. The influence of the rheological properties on the morphology development of the dispersed phase, from original pellets to final nanofibers, was studied in this work. The mechanism of morphology development of the dispersed phase involved the formation of sheets and holes, the coalescence of the holes, the size reduction and the formation of nanofibers.
