A novel temperature-/pH sensitive nanocomposite microgel cross-linked by Lithium magnesium silicate hydrate

By adopting Lithium magnesium silicate hydrate (LMSH) as physical cross-linker, a novel temperature-and pH-sensitive nanocomposite microgel based on monomer N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and acrylic acid (AAc) were prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization at 70℃. The chemical structure of resulting poly(NIPAM-LMSH-AAc) microgel was confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR and XRD. The size of microgel particle was observed by SEM. The temperature-sensitivity was investigated by turbidimeter and DSC. The results show that PNLA microgel was successful prepared under LMSH severing as physical cross-linker. The microgel dispersion presents sky blue at room temperature, while exhibits ivory white at a temperature above 33℃. Under SEM observation, the microgel particles present orbicular shape with 430nm in diameter. In addition, the introduction of AAc hasn’t clearly weaken the temperature-sensitivity of microgel dispersion.
