Properties of SPEEK/Y2O3 Proton Exchange Membrane
SPEEK/Y2O3 composite membranes were prepared with SPEEK of 48.3% sulfonation degree (DS) and characterized by SEM, holographic imaging, FTIR, and XRD. The results showed that the Y2O3 were dispersed evenly in the membranes and the coordination existed between yttrium cations in Y2O3 and oxygen anions in sulfonic groups. The crystal structure of Y2O3 changed for the characteristic peaks disappeared in XRD images of the composite membrane. The methanol resistance improved about 60% and water uptake reduced by 70% with Y2O3 contents increasing from 0 to 8wt.%. The proton conductivities of all composite membranes exceeded 10-2 S/cm at 60℃ and 75% relative humidity. SPEEK-2 and SPEEK-5 specimens showed good selectivity, having good potential for use in DMFC.
