Preparation of carbon nanotubes/polystyrene nanocomposites via in-situ polymerization

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted considerable attentions because of the excellent mechanical, electrical, and other properties. As one-dimension nano-materials, carbon nanotubes are one of important candidates to modify polymers. In this report, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were surface functionalized to produce carboxylated MWNTs (MWNT-COOH), in order to improve the dispersion of MWNTs in solvents and the interaction in the matrix. Nanocomposites of MWNT/polystyrene (PS) were prepared via in-situ polymerization. FTIR confirmed the existence of covalent interaction of the nanotubes and the polymer matrix. The incorporation of MWNTs into PS obviously improves the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.
