Sonophotocatalysis of Dicarboxylic Acids in Aqueous Solution: Joint System of Sonolysis and Photocatalysis

This study was aimed at examining reaction paths of the malonic acid in sonophotocatalysis. Malonic acid and succinic acid were prepared as non-volatile organic compounds. Argon atmosphere was served in all cases. Supplied ultrasound was 200 kHz and 200 W. Each compound was dissolved into water (10mM). In sonolysis of malonic acid solution, organic and inorganic carbon compounds such as formic acid, oxalic acid, CO2 and CO were obtained. In phtocatalysis, on the other hand, acetic acid, CO2 and CH4 were obtained. In latter case, methane would be produced from acetic acid, which was decarboxylation product from malonic acid. Thus, a breakdown in molecule proceeds in sonolysis and a step by step decarboxylation proceeds in photocatalysis. Synergistic effects were observed in sonophotocatalytic system. For example, the yield of CO increased over seven times as much as sum of products in both systems. In the case of succinic acid solution, fumaric acid and maleic acid were detected during sonolysis. This result means a dehydrogenation and a double-bond forming reaction occur. As fumalic acid is trans type and stable compound, the yield of it was larger than that of maleic acid, which was cis type compound. Isomerization of them was also discussed.
