A Continuous Model of Interaural Time Difference Based on Surface Spherical Harmonics

Interaural time difference (ITD) is one of primary cues for sound source localization, which is a continuous function of sound source positions in three-dimensional space. Measurement of ITD can only be undertaken at discrete spatial positions, however. It is necessary to establish a continuous ITD model so as to render sound images at arbitrary positions in virtual auditory display. In present work, a continuous ITD model in threedimensional space based on spherical-harmonic expansion was proposed. The model was established from measured ITDs of 52 human subjects with 493 spatial directions per person, and contains 10 expansion terms. Compared with the previous ITD model, the proposed ITD model is more accurate and more effective in reflecting the spatial characteristics of ITD. In addition, the relationship between the expansion coefficients and measured anatomical parameters was discussed.
