Robustness of Geoacoustic Parameters Inversion Using Vertical Coherence of Ambient Sea Noise

Sound emanating from ambient noise sources undergoes multiple reflections between the sea surface and sea floor. The spatial structure is determined by the geoacoustic properties of seabed, so it contains some useful information about seabed. As a relative stable characteristic, the vertical coherence of the noise can exhibit sufficiently the spatial structure of ambient noise field. Therefore, it can be used to invert for geoacoustic seabed parameters. In this paper, relations between seedbed parameters and vertical coherence are firstly analyzed, based on a simple ambient noise model in horizontal stratified medium. However, environmental variation including sea depth, sound speed profiles, array tilt, and others may affect the inversion results in actual experiments. To demonstrate the robustness of this method, effects of these mismatched aspects are considered. Simulations indicate the feasibility of inverting the sound speed, density, and attenuation in a half-space seabed. In the end, using ambient noise data measured in shallow water, some geoacoustic parameters are obtained which are in good agreement with inversion results of propagation data in the same site. We can conclude that this inversion technique is robust to be inverted seabed parameters, and is easy to be deployed because it requires only a pair of hydrophone, without any transmitted signals.
