Experimental Research of Chirp Spread Spectrum for High-rate Underwater Acoustic Communication

The underwater acoustic channel is a complicated and time-varying multipath channel, and it constrains high-rate communication. The multipath results from surface reflection and refraction during wave propagation. This property of different propagation distances of paths is explored by the chirp spread spectrum (CSS) technique, and it replaces a certain carrier by a cyclically sweeping chirp. The paths can be separated using this technique by the simple signal processing, and then the multipath channel is treated as a single-path channel for high-rate communication without ISI. The CSS is improved by using an additional chirp in every sweeping cycle within the same band to double the rate. In this paper, the CSS is researched, the analysis is given, and data collected from lake trials is analyzed to show the improvements potential advantage in doubling the data rate.
