Directivity analysis on spherical regular polyhedron sound source used for near-field HRTF measurements

A spherical regular polyhedron sound source has been proposed to approximately realize the non-directivity of a point sound source. The directivities of various spherical regular polyhedron sound sources have been calculated and analyzed. Results show that the directivity depends on the size of the spherical regular polyhedron sound source, the size of individual unit, and the number of units. Non-directivity is improved with the increasing size of individual unit or unit number, and deteriorated gradually with the increasing size of the sound source at high frequency. In addition, the size of sound source is also limited by some other factors. Based on the compromise of various factors listed above and manufacture technology, a practical spherical dodecahedral sound source with radius of 0.035m was made by using twelve micro electrodynamic loudspeaker units. It satisfies approximate non-directivity and good low-frequency performance. And the spherical dodecahedral sound source has been used to measure near-field HRTFs.
