Frequency Weighting for Assessment of Vibration Induced Annoyance from Subways
Residents along the subway lines are greatly disturbed by the structure borne noise from the subway system. The in-situ measurement in dwellings was carried out to investigate spectral distribution of transmitted energy from the rail. Results shown rail induced noise concentrated at frequency range from 20Hz to 250Hz, with the peak at 80Hz. Although the noise level is below the limit of regulations, serious annoyance is complained, indicating that A-weighted level is not sufficient for evaluation of human auditory response at low frequency range. Subjective annoyance was investigated by using low-pass filtered white noise as stimuli, results show subjective annoyance decrease approximately parabolically as high frequency content increases. A frequency weighting network was thereafter proposed for estimating subjective annoyance from 1/3 octave sound pressure level. The results show good agreement between calculated and subjective data.
