Doppler Shift and SNR Estimation in Shallow Water Acoustic Communication

In this paper, the signal model for shallow-water multi-path acoustic channel was discussed. Taking full characteristic of the fact that the carrier frequency is very much lower in underwater acoustic communication than that in air wireless communication, we use autocorrelation function (ACF) of received signal instead of that of the lowpass equivalent signal and derive eqs. needed for implementing the algorithm of Doppler and SNR estimation without training sequence in shallow-water acoustic communication. Shallow-water lake test results are given. Using the lake test results, we show the computer simulation results and compare the results when the number of paths of shallow-water acoustic channel is different. The computer simulation results show preliminarily that: (1) when the speed of the transmitter relative to that of the receiver is less than 35 m/s, the estimation error of our Doppler shift method is less than6.7×10-4; (2) the mean SNR estimation error is less than 1dB for SNR ranging from -10dB to 10dB; (3) the estimation results in shallow-water acoustic channel are independent of the number of paths.
