Special Olympics research results-development at Palacky University
Introduction The development of research focused on Special Olympics (SO) topics is described in the presentation. Early approaches toward life and behaviour of persons with mental disability in CR stressed medical and general educational intervention. First attention to physical activity and sports as one of the important phenomenon of education started in the 1970s (Kábele 1972, Mat(e)j(c)ek and Langmeier 1981). Kvapilik and (C)erná (1990) presented description of life-style of persons with mental disability supported with research results of motor skills development. Válková and Thaiszová (1989) published the results of comparison of motor abilities of sportsmen and non-sportsmen on the background of sports intervention. After changes in the 1990s Special Olympics sports design was permitted and sports training, coaches and/or volunteers education has improved rapidly. Research as crucial support for practice was included in the SO program in CR. University students play a major role in the systematic research network at Palack(y) University.
