Evaluating the validity of activity limitation tests for use in Paralympic classification

Introduction The recently published IPC Athletics Classification Manual for Physical Impairments 2008-10 establishes the taxonomic pre-conditions required for the development of an evidence-based system of classification (Tweedy, 2007). Paralympic athletics comprises four fundamental activities -running, throwing, wheelchair pushing and jumping. One requirement for an evidence-based classification system will be four batteries of activity limitation tests -tests that can be used to provide a precompetition estimate of how much limitation an athlete will experience when competitively performing each of the four fundamental activities. For each fundamental activity, a valid battery will comprise activity limitation tests that are reliable, highly correlated with performance and which, in combination, explain the maximum amount of variance in performance.
