Effects of 7 weeks low-intensity wheelchair training on the physical capacity of able-bodied men
Introduction Wheelchair-dependent individuals have often a low physical capacity. Hand rim wheelchair training with an intensity of 70% heart rate reserve (HRR) had a positive effect on the physical capacity of ablebodied men (Woude et al., 1999), but can cause overload of the musculoskeletal system, especially when applied in early rehabilitation. The rehabilitation process should be started with a balanced low-intensity training (Van Drongelen et al., 2006). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 7-week wheelchair training with an intensity of 30% versus 70%HRR on the physical capacity of able-bodied male subjects.
