Identifying the Nuts & Bolts: Experts identify content knowledge fundamentals

Introduction Understanding the nature of expert sport teachers is an area of inquiry which is gaining attention over the past decade. Berliner (1986) ignited interest in the pedagogical world with his tenets of expertise. Since then many in physical education and sport have sought to test these tenets with teachers of physical activity and these investigations have produced robust findings. It has been verified that expert sport instructors have extensive knowledge, interact with their students in specific patterns, and possess superior short-term memories that contribute to their outstanding teaching performance.
