Social cognitions across the stages of physical activity behaviour change: A Comparison of three stage models
Introduction Currently, three stage models have been used widely to explain and predict peoples physical activity behaviour. They include: the Transtheoretical Model (TTM; Prochaska & Marcus, 1994), the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA; Schwarzer, 1992) and the Berlin Exercise Stage Model (BSM; Fuchs, 1999). These stage models differ in the number, stage definition, stage assignment rules and social cognitions which are assumed to be essential for progression in each stage. Specifically, TTM proposes five stages (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance).
