Effects of establishing a running program on students exercise motivation, physical fitness, and physical activity levels using pedometers and goal setting as motivational strategies
Researchers have suggested that the use of pedometers in combination with goal settings can motivate students to exercise (Tudor-Locke, 2002; Tudor-Locke, Myers, & Rodger, 2001). Pedometers, as a motivational tool, can monitor an individuals daily activity levels, provide instant activity feedback, and reminder exercising (e.g., Tudor-Lorke, 2002). In addition, setting specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely (SMART) goals can sustain and enhance students engagement and motivation (Anderson, 2002).
