Adopting Paivios functional role and task analysis framework to examine imagery use in sport
Introduction Imagery use is the manner in which individuals employ imagery to learn and develop skills, and to facilitate performance of those skills (Morris, Spittle, & Watt, 2005). One area of interest is the identification of when and why athletes use imagery based on the functional role analysis framework developed by Paivio (1985). This involves a 2 x 2 classification where imagery can mediate behaviour through either a cognitive (e.g., skill and strategy rehearsal) or motivational (e.g., self-confidence, arousal) role, operating at either a general or specific level.
