Relationship of national pride, Olympic strengths and weaknesses perceived by host residents of the 2004 Olympic Games

Introduction National pride is one of the essential social gains for a city hosting an Olympic Games (Apostolopoulou, & Papadimitriou, 2004). The social gains of hosting an Olympiad, including cultural interaction and national pride, are often shared by all members of the society (Deccio, 1999). While hosting cities of the Olympics experienced time delays, exceeded budgets, and negative publicity, Olympic officials and governmental organizers have attempted to promote the social benefits to justify the total contribution of the local residents. The purpose of this study was to explore, (a) How residents in a hosting city of the Olympics perceived national pride, Olympic strengths and weaknesses along with their relationships; and (b) Whether the national pride was a significant indicator for continued support by residents in the hosting city of the Olympics.
