Managing athletes: Understanding the experiences of Australian footballers beginning an elite career
Introduction The purpose of the study was to develop insights into how young Australian footballers experienced their transition into the elite ranks of the game. The Australian Football League draft process selects approximately 70 young men of 17-18 years into the elite ranks each year out of 2000 nominations. Only 30% of those who make it go on to play more than 50 games in their AFL career. The process is extremely sudden. Young men may be completing their high school years at one moment and then learn that they are expected to move within days as far as 3000 kms across the country to join their new club.
