Physical characteristics as performance indicators in surfing

Introduction Surfboard riding (surfing) has experienced a world wide boom in participants and media attention over the last decade at both the recreational and competition level (Mendez-Villanueva & Bishop, 2005). However, in South Africa only 8% of Surfing South Africas (SSA) total members are affiliated to the Professional Surf Tour (PST) are previously disadvantaged individuals (PDI) (Surfing South Africa, 2007). These statistics are not representative of the South African population and the need has been expressed for this discrepancy to be addressed. In response, SSA has actively embarked on a talent identification and development programme.
